Often, I hear and read about how necessary it is to “focus on the positive” or “find the good” in every situation. This sounds nice and fills us up with warm, fuzzy feelings. However, it can be improved. “Focusing on the positive” and “finding the good” are limited because they are static. They don’t guarantee improvement, achievement, or value creation. As we pursue Alpha it is not enough to “be positive” or “find the good”. We must consciously and dynamically seek actionable opportunity.

The other day, I heard someone say “We should stop saying ‘no’ and embrace a ‘yes’ attitude.” My first reaction to this was “Wow. It really depends on the details.” While it’s a romantic idea to say “yes” to everything, this behavior can be quite impractical. At it’s worst, saying “yes” too often drags us away from accomplishing our life goals. At the very least, it delays advancement. Saying “no” can provide more time, resources, and energy to improve, achieve, and create value. Here are 3 reasons why it’s GREAT to say “no”.
